personality.
The impression Chrollo makes, upon first meeting, depends wildly on where the meeting takes place and what agenda he's pursuing at that time. In most cases, when dealing with people he may find useful or hasn't decided on an approach toward yet, Chrollo will generally present himself as a soft-spoken and gently enthusiastic young man with bright eyes and a kind and curious nature. In this guise, he is immensely likable and seems trustworthy, has a self-deprecating and humble way about him. He will also show an interest in whoever he's speaking to, asking them gentle questions in what appears to be a harmless manner - in this persona, he's quite good at teasing out secrets and confidences, building trust. This, then, is his public face - the face he is most likely to show strangers or potential victims. When he's on Troupe business, however, Chrollo is a different man entirely. Quiet and serious with an intense stare, Chrollo is aloof and unapproachable, seemingly unemotional. Far from his engaging and talkative public self, he's often silent, as well, preferring to observe and analyze, speaking only when necessary to give an order or explain a situation or his reasoning. This face is, or can be, quite terrifying especially to those who aren't personally involved with him. Furthermore, his odd, quirky way of moving and speaking, his silence, his seemingly impenetrable and expressionless face can combine to make him seem a bit alien, at times - even inhuman. This impression is easy to understand. Aside even from the ruthlessness and bordering on sociopathic lack of remorse he feels for committing and/or ordering crimes from petty theft to murder (and even genuine atrocities like the genocide of the Kurta clan), Chrollo also has a seemingly inhuman mind. Chrollo observes everything, misses nothing. He is able to unlock puzzles, analyze situations or information quickly and efficiently with a minimum of data and make easy in-the-moment adjustments even when his life is on the line such as in the battle with Silva and Zeno. Chrollo is also able to put emotional needs such as revenge, grief, anger and instead pursue paths dictated by the demands of rationality. Physically he is generally immobile - even his facial expression rarely changes. And he carries himself with an unmistakable ease and confidence, yet never tips over into arrogance: he's aware of the extent of his abilities, just as he's aware of when they're being taxed. In general, he's quite efficient, killing his enemies without hesitation - you won't get a big anime villain speech from him, in fact he barely talks at all before or during a confrontation, preferring to observe his enemy's behavior and analyze their strengths and weaknesses based on that. The major exception to this is a battle with someone whose powers he wants to acquire - in a case like that, he'll hold back significantly to prolong the fight in the hopes of creating such an opportunity. But don't let his efficiency imply that he doesn't enjoy his cruelty - one of the bounty hunters sent after him recognizes Chrollo as a kindred spirit, describing the both of them as "addicted to murder." That does seem true in some sense - Chrollo refers to death battles as "play," for example. When asked how he can have so little regard for the life of strangers, Chrollo is unable to truly articulate his motivations beyond saying that he can kill people who have nothing to do with him in part because... they have nothing to do with him. He does recognize in that moment that his motivation isn't actually as simple as that, however he doesn't (or isn't able to) explain any further. Even so, he rarely goes wild, and never without reason. You can speculate that this is directly tied to his history as a Meteor City child... and you would probably be right. As one who grew up as an outcast, with no true name or identity in the world, the only bonds he shares are with fellow outcasts and rejected people. He has, therefore, no regard for those who didn't grow up in the same circumstances, and the same place... just as they have no regard for him. That said, even his own life is expendable to him - as an "empath" character once noted, he has accepted death without fear or uneasiness, and lives each day with death by his side, and yet is happy. His commanding presence and natural leadership skill add to his striking impression. It is his strong personality, in fact, which allows him inspire love and loyalty even in the band of miscreants he's gathered, and to hold them together, mediate their disputes and and maintain order despite their individually volatile personalities. It probably helps that, despite his superior strength and position as their leader, he does not consider himself above them or more important than them. Quite the contrary - he considers the greater survival of the troupe itself far more important than himself (or any other one member). Despite all this, and the impression he can give, Chrollo is, in fact, very human. His greatest weakness seems to be his slight awkwardness with emotion and his tendency to think in pure intellectual ideals rather than emotional realities even when dealing with his own heart and the hearts of others. The Troupe is the thing Chrollo loves most in the world. He calls many of them by nicknames, and openly weeps at Uvo's death. Indeed, his love for the Troupe is absolute and demonstrative of his extreme ingroup/outgroup mentality: to him, there is the Troupe and there is everyone else, and only the 12 on one side of that line matter. The residents of Meteor City can likely be said to fall in a rare in-between space - more important than strangers and less than his family. For those who aren't Spiders, this is probably as good as you can get with Chrollo. It should be mentioned that both his public and private faces are, in fact, "faces." Certainly his cold persona, the head of the Spider, is more "honest" than his gentler presentation... but neither is entirely accurate. His truest personality, the most accurate, is probably some combination of the two - when his guards go down, Chrollo's normally composed face can be quite animated and youthful, and even his voice and speech patterns become more casual and light. It's evident that his primary face is a cultivated one - forged through his time with the Troupe. Its evolution can be vaguely tracked through the short flashbacks we're shown - Chrollo laughing as a child, Chrollo friendly and bright eyed as he brings the original members together for the first time, Chrollo with a harder face as he crosses paths with Silva Zoldyck for the first time. Chrollo in the present with his hair slicked back, expressionless and controlled. Chrollo can come off, at times, as a bit quirky and creepy - in particular his eyes are quite memorable and unnerving when he wants them to be. He can quickly swing between cute/childlike moments, restrained sophistication and a wildness both compelling and frightening. Finally, he has a number of interests - mostly in beautiful or valuable things, which he indulges through theft. However, his interest is fickle and inevitably dies out, leaving him to sell his treasures off on a regular basis. The only possible exception made is for books, as he has a particular fondness for reading, with a special love of antique and first edition books. powers.
✣NEN Chrollo is an extremely powerful and adept Nen user. Basically this means that he can use his aura - consisting of life energy - to achieve various enhancement effects such as superhuman speed/agility/endurance/strength/enhanced healing/sensing things. As an advanced used, he's also familiar with various more difficult/specialized techniques such as increasing the power of a single bodypart more than (or even to the exclusion of) others or using his aura to harden/manipulate other objects. There are several types of Nen users - Chrollo is a Specialist, whose abilities fall outside the lines and rules that apply to other types. Nen also permits him to make use of special, self-developed abilities called Hatsu. In his case, his power is called Skill Hunter, and is detailed below. ✣SKILL HUNTER Chrollo is able to use his Nen to copy (not steal, as in canon) the powers of others under a certain set of condition. Canon conditions no longer apply, however, his abilities having been altered somewhat by the Porter. Currently, the conditions are as follows:
Chrollo's book currently contains the following abilities from canon:
Additionally, since arriving, Chrollo has added the following to his powerset. (* signifies that he will only use the ability in dire situatiions.)
Note: Chrollo is no longer limited by the need to hold Bandit's Secret open in his hand while making use of powers - and is therefore also no longer limited to using one ability at a time. However, there are still limitations as follows:
✣SHADE SPIDERS Finally, as a gift from the Porter, Chrollo can summon "spiders" of various sizes (small to man-sized) from the shadow. They can move through shadows, dissolving into nothing along with anything they're carrying/have ensnared in their black webbing. They look, behave, and can take damage as appropriate for a normal spider of their type (inasmuch as a man-sized spider is "normal,") but dissolve into black smoke when "killed." Their webbing, too, dissolves when broken. Chrollo can control and see through the eyes of these spiders remotely. The larger they are, the fewer he can create. abilities.
✣GENIUS LEVEL INTELLECT That Chrollo serves as the "mind" of the Spider and the others as its body and legs despite his being the strongest among them by far speaks volumes as to the power of his intellect. Chrollo is, in a word, brilliant: able to quickly and easily process and decode information as well as form plans and analyze data almost instantly. He uses his formidable mind in both combat and noncombat situations. ✣HAND TO HAND COMBAT Chrollo is an excellent hand-to-hand combatant, capable of killing skilled fighters with a pen and fighting two other excellent combatants simultaneously with minimal strain despite holding back the entire time. Silva Zoldyck comments that his combat instinct is outstanding, as he dodges attacks with perfect timing and thus prevents any openings in his defense that, otherwise, could be taken advantage of. ✣ASSASSINATIONS AND STEALTH Chrollo is able to move quietly and quickly through a hunter-infested building, committing multiple murders as he goes, without being seen. Even when he's located, the hunter who finds him notes that he's only traceable because he chose to leave clues to draw the next hunter in. Silva Zoldyck also notes that Chrollo's murders are efficient, perfectly executed and "beautiful" - often achieved with a single strike, and without revealing his presence for an instant more than necessary. ✣WEAPON MASTERY He's also skilled in "some" weapons, most notably daggers. He's probably at least reasonably proficient in other weapons as well, but the dagger is his personal preference. Well, daggers and pens, apparently. ✣POISON USE Chrollo is familiar with poisons and how to use them. He often poisons his weapons, in fact... so don't let him scratch you. quotes.
Machi: I wonder what Chrollo's planning?
Feitan: We're thieves. We're here to steal. Machi:What do you think he's after? He loves books... I bet it's some old books. ... Chrollo: All of it. We shall take the underground auction's treasures. ✣✣✣
Uvogin: Gangsters from all over the world run that auction! We'll make enemies of all of them! Chrollo!
Chrollo: Are you afraid? Uvogin: I'm ecstatic. Give us the order... right now! Chrollo: You have my permission. Kill them. Kill every person who interferes. ✣✣✣
Uvogin: There's a Judas among us, Chrollo.
Chrollo: No there isn't. Besides, I don't consider Judas a traitor. It's said that Judas sold Jesus out for thirty pieces of silver... but how much would a traitor ask from the Mafia? Consider the merits. What would the traitor gain by selling us out to the Mafia? Money? Glory? Prestige? Do you truly believe that any of us cares for those things? Besides, something else doesn't add up. Assuming there were a spy, the response was too tepid. If they had foreknowledge that Class A bounties would appear at the auction, they would have increased security. The action goes were all uninformed and unarmed. I believe that someone provided information that wasn't explicit. However a mafia community leader believed that information. ...The mafia should have realized by now that, since 500 guests disappeared, they must be dealing with Nen. Uvogin: ...we can take them on, can't we? Chrollo: Sure. Put on a show for the pursuers. That will draw them out. ✣✣✣
Chrollo: A chain user.... He's either a manipulator or a conjurer. Uvogin is a dominant fighter... but in a one-on-one fight, he is most vulnerable to those two categories. Many Conjurers can give special abilities to the items they create. Some of those abilities could render Uvo helpless. And a Manipulator could manipulate Uvo himself.
If he fails to return by dawn... there will be a change in plans. ✣✣✣
Chrollo: I've heard that you're a good fortune teller. Someone once mentioned it to me. I can't remember who...
Neon: Yeah, lots of important people want their fortunes told... Chrollo: How accurate are you? Neon: They say I'm always right! Chrollo: Wow! Could you tell my fortune? Neon: Sure! Write down your full name, birthday and blood type. ...Chrollo Lucilfer... 26 years old? Wow, you're older than I thought. You have an unusual name. Chrollo: My friends call me "Boss." ✣✣✣
Chrollo: May I ask you a question? This verse refers to a requiem for the dead. Do you believe in the afterlife? Personally, I believe in ghosts. And that's why I'll do as he would have wanted. Go wild. ✣✣✣
Assassin: That scent... a trail of blood, dripped on purpose then wiped up. Barely enough to leave a scent. Barely enough to be detected... by a certain breed. You're the same as me. A predator. Addicted to murder.
✣✣✣
Chrollo: Don't worry. I don't use traps. That would be too boring. Let's play one-on-one.
✣✣✣
Assassin: Why... why am I still alive?!
Chrollo: This is known as an Indoor Fish. Made from Nen, it can only exist in enclosed spaces. It's a carnivore that enjoys Human flesh. Its victims don't bleed or feel pain. and they won't die until the Indoor Fish disappears. ✣✣✣
Chrollo: Dear Uvo... can you hear us? We are playing a requiem for you.
✣✣✣
Silva: Impressive. He's dodging dad's attacks and keeping an eye on me. He's improved a lot since last time. And we don't know what he's capable of... To stop him, we just may have to pay with our lives.
✣✣✣
Chrollo: Aren't you going to finish me off?
Zeno: The dons were our clients. Now that they're dead, you're no longer our target. Chrollo: Really? You won't have the chance again. Zeno: Do you think we do this for fun? It's not like we take pleasure in killing. I don't want to work or die for nothing. Chrollo: Could I ask you something? If you and I were to fight one-on-one... who would win? Zeno: Hmph. Me, of course. Unless you were to actually try to kill me. Chrollo: (Oh, he knew.) ... What a drag. I couldn't steal their powers. ✣✣✣
The motto of Meteor City: We accept anything, so take nothing from us.
✣✣✣
Investigator: If the Troupe is from Meteor City... you don't want to fight them. We're up against the wrong people. The Dons would agree.
✣✣✣
Chrollo: We leave tonight.
Nobunaga: Not yet. We find the Chain User. Chrollo: Don't make it personal. ✣✣✣
Chrollo: Today is the first Saturday of September. If we go home today, we aren't likely to see the Chain User next week. The best thing about these fortunes is that they tell us how to avoid catastrophes. If we leave without a fight... they won't come true. Nobunaga... you and Uvo both volunteered to lay your lives on the line for the rest of us. Dying was a risk you were willing to take. Shizuku, Paku and Shal are in charge of recon and cleanup. They're vital to us and all of our operations. It's your job to protect them. Or am I wrong?
Which of us is being selfish... you, or me? ✣✣✣
(upon being provided with new information by Shizuku and Pakunoda)
Chrollo:Shizuku... Pakunoda... nice. Actually, I'm an idiot. Damn... what's wrong with me? If I'd stopped to consider why their boss's daughter is in YorkNew City, we could have found the Chain User sooner. ✣✣✣
(when asked how the Troupe can kill people who have nothing to do with them)
Chrollo:You look pretty hostile, considering you just surrendered. ...Why, indeed? It might be because they have nothing to do with us? No. On second thought, it isn't that simple. How to verbally express our motives... I'm not that fond of it. But oddly enough - or perhaps it's not that odd. Is that the key to understanding myself? ✣✣✣
Chrollo: Paku, check them again.
Paku: Sure. What shall I ask them? Chrollo: ...what are you hiding? ✣✣✣
Chrollo: (at 16 years old) Together, we are the Spider. I'm the head, and you're the legs. The legs do what the head says, but there will be times when the legs are more important than the head. If I die, someone else will take over. My orders are the highest priority, but my life is not. Be sure to make the right decision. I'm only part of the Spider - what's important is the survival of the whole. Not the individual. Never forget this.
✣✣✣
Pakunoda: Chrollo, we still need you... even if it means betraying the Spider.
✣✣✣
(upon being kidnapped by Kurapika)
Chrollo: The girl's fortune didn't mention this. Therefore this event isn't significant enough to matter. Do you need further explanation? I consider this situation the same as an afternoon coffee break. A peaceful outing.
✣✣✣
Chrollo: Are those the chains you used to kill Uvo? What were Uvo's last words?
Kurapika: I don't remember. Chrollo: You're lying. I can relate. I feel the same way. I have nothing to say to you. ✣✣✣
Chrollo: First of all, you've made the wrong assumption. I have no value as a hostage.
Melody: He isn't lying. Everything he says is true. Chrollo: There you go. This is reality. You people are the ones on the ropes. Melody: His heartbeat is normal. He isn't shaken by any of this. He isn't worried or frightened of death. I can hear that he's accepted death. I can hear that he walks with death everyday... and yet, he's happy. How is this possible?! How he is capable of producing such a sound? Kurapika: What are you... what are you people? Chrollo: The Spider. |
