THE PHANTOM TROUPE
HUNTER X HUNTER

MEMBERSHIP: Chrollo, Nobunaga, Pakunoda, Uvogin

The Phantom Troupe is Chrollo's "family," though until recently he didn't generally use that word himself since he doesn't really believe in the concept of family. (Of late he's softened about this due to repeated exposure). Nonetheless, that's definitely... what they are. Chrollo is intensely sentimental about the Troupe, and considers them almost a part of himself, or rather he considers him a part of them. They are the Spider, and he is the head and they are the body and that's that - they're one being, they function and live as one being, and even when separated he still feels the ties drawing them together.

Chrollo basically grew up with the original members - it's unclear when he met them, but it's notable that when he formed the Troupe at 16 years old, they already knew/recognized him so he definitely didn't just pick them out arbitrarily. Since then, they've added several additional members, and have lost and replaced a few here and there (before Chrollo's canonpoint) - the previous #4 left them, and the previous #8 was killed by Silva Zoldyck, Uvogin and Pakunoda were killed by Kurapika. Chrollo mourns every one that falls, and has been shown to cry at their loss - it's clear that he loves his troupers intensely, respects them, and values their lives - and particularly the life of the Spider as an organization - over his own. And while his orders may be considered absolute, if they are truly uncomfortable with them, he always listens to and considers their viewpoints and if an agreement can't be reached... they can always just flip a coin.

Maybe that's why they love him so much - enough to devote their lives to him, and put him and his judgment above all else in nearly every case. Funny enough, Chrollo is a bit clueless as to how much he means to them - though he does know they love him, he's largely unaware of the extent to which their love for and loyalty to the Spider runs through him, and how instrumental he is to the functioning of the organization. In the end, even when they're willing to risk his life, it's only because they feel he'd want them to.

I should probably mention here that the Phantom Troupe is a group of incredibly powerful murderers and thieves. Without them, he's felt vaguely discontent and restless, as it is only with them that he feels truly understood and at home - they share his taste for abandoned places, for death, for adventure, and his apathy for anything that isn't about them. Now, the more of them arrive, the more he slide back into his truer persona, and the bolder he becomes.

Notably, Chrollo can be said to feel a similar, but much less intense, bond with their home (Meteor City) as a whole, as well.

What's important is the survival of the whole.
Not the individual.
Never forget this.

NOBUNAGA HAZAMA
HUNTER X HUNTER

JOHAKYU

One of the original Troupe members. Nobunaga is an expert swordsman and en user, as well as one of the frontline fighters of the Troupe. He's also Uvo's best friend and partner. As a founder, Chrollo has known him for at least 10 or 11 years (since the Troupe was formed 10 or 11 years ago) but probably longer than that.

Nobu is one of the more outspoken members, willing to openly challenge Chrollo and demand explanations and answers. While this might annoy some leaders, and sometimes he does feel like the timing could be a bit better on those outbursts, in the end Chrollo rather likes it. It keeps him honest, and forces him to act rationally and in the interests of the Spider - not that he was ever inclined to do otherwise, but he does appreciate the checks and balances in play here. After all, what would he say to Nobu if his ruling was questioned and he had no good reason?

In any case, Nobu is a man of good humor and strong faith in their family's bond - and Chrollo's personal affection for Nobu is strong enough to have inspired him to spare Gon and Killua when he first arrived in Heropa, which says a great deal considering how concerned he is about his image and everything the children knew about him. Furthermore, while he knows Nobu has a short fuse, he also recognizes that Nobu is a intelligent and insightful, e.g. when he came to the same conclusions as Chrollo with regards to registration, which just makes his respect and affection stronger.

Chrollo named one of his strongest copied abilities in tribute to Nobunaga - Sei to dou (stillness and motion), which stops time for 5 seconds.

an old friend and a moral check
ha ha ha...
"moral."

PAKUNODA
HUNTER X HUNTER

MEMORYBOMB

Intelligent, with sound judgment and a (generally) even temper, Pakunoda is the Troupe's (other) voice of reason. With some exceptions, but more on that later. Within the Troupe, Pakunoda is considered part of the recon team, with the goal of gathering information and cleaning up after their messes. One of the original members, Paku is another person he basically grew up around - he's known her for at least 10 years, so his attachment to her is quite powerful. His immense respect for her intellect and insight make her among his most trusted "legs"... but that said, he is a little troubled by her choice to protect him over the goals of the Spider itself. To him, this attachment to him as a person is one of her primary weaknesses, and it's a bit frustrating, which makes him a complete hypocrite.

All that said... his reservations don't really make much difference in the end. Paku died for the Spider, and risked everything for him. He can't really hold that against her, not when she's back now. Instead, he takes preventing that kind of situation as one of his highest priorities going forward.

Recently, things have changed between them to some degree. Paku's request that Chrollo take on her abilities in case of her disappearance left her somewhat less irreplaceable in theory, but her generally calm head and good judgment led to his decision to appoint her as his successor in the event that he should be sent him, himself. As such they agreed to prepare to take on one another's duties - though he has sworn to use her abilities on an emergency basis only.

Things became more heated, however, when her anger at Hisoka's betrayal of the Spiders and her knowledge of Chrollo's developing relationship with him combined with his request that she take on his role in the future led to an awkward confrontation and brief estrangement. They reconciled in late May, when Hisoka disappeared from this world for a time. He has since given her the go ahead to "check" Hisoka's feelings for him for the peace of mind of the three Spiders present.

if he's the spiderdaddy
is she the spidermommy?
(beloved and trusted family; potential successor)

UVOGIN
HUNTER X HUNTER

GOWILD

Nobunaga's longtime partner and best friend, and the first of the original Spiders to fall. Like the others, Chrollo has known Uvo for ages, and has always held him in great respect and esteem. During missions, Uvo is shown to be one of the Spiders that Chrollo contacts directly with orders or for check ins, and to be largely left in command of pure combat situations.

Uvo's death was a bizarre wakeup call of sorts to Chrollo, who always knew it was possible to lose people (#8 had previously been killed by Silva Zoldyck, for example), but had never been forced to deal with the loss of one of the original "core," much less one of their strongest fighters. In a certain sense, it wasn't completely surprising - he was aware of how much Uvo loved to push his limits and face up to dangerous foes, after all. And a frontline warrior is always in danger anyway. But even so, losing him shook something within Chrollo that never quite stopped shaking, particularly when coupled with the losses and disasters that followed.

Since his appearance here, Chrollo and Uvo have definitely become closer - in large part because they were the only Spiders here for a few weeks, and Uvo happened to be present during some of Chrollo's personal difficulties with regards to his situation with Hisoka. For example, while they were always close in the way Spiders are close, Chrollo and Uvo definitely weren't drinking buddies before this world... whereas now Uvo has personally taken Chrollo to bars and dragged him home after, not to mention helped him move.

So you could say they're closer than before, yes.

Also, Uvo has banned Chrollo from drinking alcohol when in a poor disposition. Chrollo tends to be oddly compliant with this... probably because he knows it's for his own good.

kind of like a "bro"
if chrollo had bros.
polices his booze intake
and it's probably better that way.

HISOKA THE MAGICIAN
HUNTER X HUNTER

DEBAUCHEWY

Short version: Chrollo's lover, ally and would-be killer.

Long version: Hisoka is from Chrollo's world, and is a former subordinate, of sorts - a member of the Troupe who wasn't a member of the Troupe. At the time, Chrollo was aware of him as a particularly strong member, and as a wildcard whose motivations were, let's say, unclear. Though suspicious, Chrollo was willing to give him a chance and so let a snake sit in the belly of the Spider for around three years until it finally showed its fangs. As it happens, Hisoka had only joined the Troupe to get closer to Chrollo -with the aim of thrillkilling him, basically, having been attracted to the depth of Chrollo's power.

Chrollo is unaware of the extent of Hisoka's betrayal - he knows Hisoka appeared to know Kurapika a bit too well, and of course he's guessed that they had some connection anyway based on his appearance when Kurapika and Pakunoda made a particular hostage transfer. However, he's never known the details. In any case, after that whole debacle, Chrollo was left without his nen, and unable to contact the Troupe on pain of death, so he made a deal with Hisoka to unlock his Nen in exchange for a duel once the dust settled. He was waiting for Hisoka when he appeared in Cape Canaveral.

He arrived with his powers not only unsealed but enhanced in some ways, though at the cost of most of his gathered powers. So he made another deal with Hisoka at that time - Hisoka would help to build Chrollo's abilities back up, and Chrollo would give him that fight. In the meantime, Chrollo helped to mollify Hisoka's bloodlust by satisfying his ordinary lust. This wasn't really a big deal to Chrollo - sex, like all things, is a tool to him. But as always he underestimated the powerful influence of his own emotionality. Long story short, Hisoka's history with him became a wedge that held open his walls. Chrollo grew to appreciate Hisoka in all his oddness and madness - grew to appreciate these things in a way that, really, only someone like Chrollo could. And then Chrollo grew fond of him. And then Chrollo fell in love with him.

For a long time, he basically tried to ignore it - he assumed it was a one-sided attachment, and considered his infatuation with someone whose ultimate goal was to murder him to be quite mad, in itself. But as Chrollo doesn't mind madness or death, he wasn't especially troubled by the implications, and so their arrangement continued. In time, through some complicated bloodmagic routine with Matthew Lin, Hisoka was forced to face his own feelings for Chrollo, and that kind of pushed them to the next level as they mutually admitted their attachments (though not their "love") and grew closer. And closer. And it just kept progressing, really.

Of late, their previously unofficial relationship has taken a turn toward the official - Chrollo suggested he would split off from his girlfriend, Jolyne, and (after a suitable time) start dating Hisoka, and the suggestion was accepted. Jolyne left the world shortly after, before Chrollo could actually officially break it off with her, but you could say that puts them in "waiting for a suitable time" mode at the moment. In part, this was inspired by Hisoka's having ported out for about a week and a half, during which Chrollo realized how much he'd come to desire him, and how valuable moments are in a world where either could disappear at any time.

Despite all this, on some fundamental level Chrollo feels their relationship remains unchanged. Hisoka still basically wants to kill him, after all, which he was reminded of when he chose to give Hisoka a spar for his birthday. Not that he ever forgot, really. Also, he hasn't forgotten that Hisoka remains Hisoka - he's fickle. That said, Chrollo is also aware that the two of them are peculiarly suited for one another, and that his particular abilities and way of thinking have the potential to make him... very difficult to shake off, for someone like Hisoka. At times he's wondered whether Hisoka can truly be said to love "him" or "his abilities" - but both he and Hisoka have largely admitted/accepted that the answer is "both," because the answer is truly the same - Chrollo wouldn't be Chrollo without his seemingly fathomless strength and capacity for evolution.

Even so... he's always considered it temporary, though he doubts that sometimes, now. And he's always considered it a disaster... if a beautiful one.

Finally, sometimes Chrollo really wants to drag Hisoka back into the Troupe - he's even brought it up. You could say it's something he turns over in his head occasionally more than something he's really invested in as of now - he's conflicted, because while he sees Hisoka's value as an ally, he's not sure how well the Spider and the Clown truly mesh, especially considering the history between them. Furthermore, he's actually quite attracted to Hisoka's independence and freedom... but at the same time, part of him wants to lock it down. So basically... It's complicated, and ever-evolving.

Much as it always has been.

lover and ally
traitor and enemy
pow pow, i love you.

ILLUMI ZOLDYCK
HUNTER X HUNTER

PINPRICKS

Illumi was an associate of sorts of his in their homeworld - it's hard to call them 'friends' since so little is known about their association (and because Illumi doesn't have real friends and Chrollo's are all Spiders), but they knew each other well enough for Illumi to weigh his "loyalty" to Hisoka vs his "loyalty" to Chrollo when asked to help Hisoka slip away from the Spiders to stalk Chrollo - and for Hisoka to win mostly based on longevity, wtf.

In any case, associates. Chrollo also once hired Illumi to kill the 10 Dons who ran the mafia in order to get Silva and Zeno (whom the Dons had hired) off his back.

Ingame, Illumi was here once before, and they hung around together once or twice before his disappearance. Chrollo has very clear memories of Illumi coming in his window without permission and eating all their pork buns. So far this scene hasn't repeated itself, but on the other hand he did somehow talk himself into a knitting museum date with Illumi. So far he's managed to dodge it.

Illumi is a large portion of the reason Chrollo is hands-off with Killua, incidentally. He considers getting into conflict with him more trouble than its worth, especially in terms of social fallout.

uh.
are they "friends," or...?

KILLUA
HUNTER X HUNTER

KILLECTRIC

Illumi's brother, and one of the two boys favored by both Nobunaga and Pakunoda. Chrollo has limited experience with this kid, both from his previous iteration and from this one - he's aware that Illumi is deeply weird about him, and that he's the intelligent one of the two. So far, he's also proven easier to work with - he's smart and less idealistic than Gon, so without that kid there, he's less inclined to go off on self-destructive, SuperGood-motivated tangents. And that's good! Because Chrollo doesn't want his dirty laundry being aired all over this world, and Killua doesn't want Chrollo taking him apart! And Chrollo doesn't want to take him apart, because he doesn't think it's worth it to get into a thing with Hisoka or Illumi over some child who doesn't matter (to him).

So basically, so far so good - Chrollo has no real problems with Killua as long as he walks the line.

illumi's bratty kid brother
keep yer mouth closed
you albino kitten

ANA RAMIR
ORIGINAL

HEAVYHITTER

One of the first people Chrollo met in this world. Ramir introduced herself by pretending that she knew the previous iteration of him, which he... saw through pretty much immediately, but kept humoring because it was amusing. Eventually he ended up giving her a "reading" in a restaurant, which she messaged him about some weeks later claiming it came true.

Overall, Chrollo doesn't have a strong opinion on Ramir. He finds her pleasant enough company, but doesn't know her well enough to go beyond that, although he did think her pizza pushing at Nobunaga was kind of hilarious. Also, he's curious about her abilities - he suspects superstrength is involved since she made a crack about her power being arm wrestling, but he can't be 100% sure given her personality.

At one point Nobu dared her to get Hisoka to randomly go on a vacation with her for two weeks. Chrollo asked him to check into her abilities at that time, but Hisoka then promptly... ported out... when he was supposed to go. OOPS.

pizza's not that great
ok

ARTURIA PENDRAGON
FATE/ZERO

NOBLESWORD

Well... the fact is, he doesn't know her very well. However, she is (oddly enough) the King Arthur of legend. He's fascinated by that, actually - not so much by the fact that King Arthur is an apparently teenaged girl per se but by the implications that carry as far as the whispers of history go. More importantly, however he's fascinated by the implications with regards to her abilities.

Because King Arthur is renown for having an immensely strong magical sword, isn't he...?

...anyway, he's stalking that. Otherwise, he finds her personality both intriguing and confounding. That level of idealism just seems like a bad idea, but she's so earnest about it.

Power Stalking: ??? something about excalibur.

A mythical king
...probably has cool powers
right?

CROCODILE
ONE PIECE

SUNASUNA

...Crocodile reminds Chrollo of himself if he'd been spat through a bara-making machine and turned into a mafia lord. It's hard to explain really - they look related. In any case, Chrollo's kindness persona makes it a bit difficult to openly talk to him in public (on the network, at least), and in person they've only met once: when Chrollo lifted his sand powers. Which... well, that was great. He quite enjoys them.

He does think Crocodile is a bit elitist though! All that nonsense talk about diners and cute punny names is a real buzzkill, or at least it would be if Chrollo cared about things like that. And he's pretty sure Crocodile has some understanding of what it is Chrollo's powers actually do, which means he's watching this guy for signs of revenge or bitterness or anything of that sort. So far, nothing... but Chrollo of all people is aware that the surface does not always betray the contents within.

Power Copied: cool sand stuff

join the rabbit
love yourself

DEATH
DC COMICS

AHAPPYENDING

Death, or "Didi" as she is typically known here, was Chrollo's roommate when he first arrived in this world. He always kind of liked her, found her comfortable to be around, and they had an interesting conversation at a charity festival one time in which he witnessed her memory of killing a sun. That's how he came to understand who she was, and what her abilities were. For the next few months he was sort of conflicted about picking her abilities up - as a man with a fondness for death, so to speak, it seemed disrespectful. But after Kurapika's disappearance, Chrollo lost a great deal of his sentimentality and used a bit of her blood that he'd collected earlier to inherit her death/life touch.

He hasn't really interacted with her much since then, as he feels a bit conflicted about it even now, and he moved to Maurtia Falls shortly thereafter anyway.

Power Copied: Blink (life/death touch)

out of all the things
it seems to me most strange
that man should fear
seeing that death,
a necessary end,
will come when it will come.

HAZEL LOCKWOOD
ORIGINAL

DEADTECTIVE

At some point, he apparently became Hazel's mother?? He's not sure how this happened - they spoke a few times, sort of casually, and then somehow ended up discussing Hazel's work situation - or rather her lack of work situation - and he gave her career choice advice and she called him "mom" and...

THEN SHE BOUGHT HIM A MOTHER'S DAY GIFT.

Since then, he's started playing along. Their conversations can become epic parodies of parent-child relationships, but she also taught him how to use html (a little), and she's amusing so he's willing to play along.

Also, she's dead. What's that about?

no one should bury their fake child
but this wont didn't stay buried anyway
so it's cool

IRA GAMAGORI
KILL LA KILL

BULWANK

Nonah's imPort ambassador. Chrollo's not terribly familiar with him - they haven't spoken all that much. However, he does have an interest in Gamagori, and the nature of that interest is pretty obvious: he wants Gamagori's power! He caught sight of Gamagori battling Annie during the Hornet mindfuck, and has seen him on patrols, so he's fulfilled two of the three requirements... but getting something personal from him is a bit tougher, so he has Uvo watching for opportunities while bothering Gamagori in general.

Aside from that, he finds Gama very boisterous and sort of deeply amusing. Gamagori has also asks him to create a database of imPort powers, which is basically the best birthday gift anyone could have given him, wow.

Power Stalking: Size change

this guy though
very serious and also
very earnest?

JESSE PINKMAN
BREAKING BAD

HOSTAGE

Chrollo doesn't really know Jesse all that well - they had a kind of pleasant conversation about ADD once, and then Chrollo won his healing services in an auction. He did this mostly to gain access to Jesse - to learn what he values, and to see his abilities in action, because he wanted to grab Jesse's powers. Or more specifically, his ability to enhance other people's powers... and his own.

During the Flare outbreak, he finally got his chance when he asked Jesse to enhance Uvo's strength to let him better fight a major monster problem. With that viewing of the power in use, he was then free to take the sole sentimental item Jesse had - a hand carved wooden dog - which he then used to capture that specific ability.

Anyway, Jesse still owes him a full heal sometime, but Chrollo can generally take care of his own business, so it hasn't come up again. Chrollo is aware that Jesse still has a rather lovely regenerative ability that he'd like, however, so his eyes are open for opportunities.

Power Copied: Power Packer (Power Enhancement)
Power Stalked: Regeneration

he seems like a person with a lot of
...problems.
none of which have anything to do with anything.
so.

JOSUKE HIGASHIKATA
JOJO'S BIZARRE ADVENTURE

UNBREAKER

Josuke is Jolyne's uncle, despite being younger than her which seems to have something to do with timelines (not surprising in this world). He's excitable, good-natured and sort of sweet - another one Chrollo might be tempted to like a lot if he weren't aware of the differences in their moral systems. Sadly, he is, which means he's not inclined to get too attached.

Even so, he's had enjoyable times with Josuke - both benignly enjoyable (talking charity and thrill-seeking with him) and sort of awful enjoyable (running into him after using Lunatic's fire and pretending it had nothing to do with him). He finds Josuke's good nature a bit easy to take advantage of, but is aware that he's also a bit of a trickster himself and thus can't be underestimated. He's vaguely aware that Josuke is a friend of Hisoka's, as well, which is another reason not to rock the boat too much.

Aside from which, Josuke seems to really admire Chrollo and think he's cool... which wouldn't normally matter, but he's likeable enough that it makes Chrollo a bit reluctant to be too awful to him. At one point, Josuke expressed interest in modeling, and Chrollo promptly contacted his agent about it. It's taking a while to get back to him, because... busy... but...

...also, he totally copied Josuke's power, oops.

Power Copied: System Restore (Crazy Diamond)

a good natured young man!
and yet likable anyway
how does that even work

KEN KANEKI
tokyo ghoul

ENUCLEATION

This place is full of weird undeadish zombie things? Okay, Kaneki isn't really a zombie - he's a ghoul, which seems to be some kind of human flesh eating superpowered creature that used to be human. They don't exist on Chrollo's world, so he's not really sure what the deal is there. Anyway, Kaneki's personal self-hatred problems - the fact that he seems to see himself as a monster and tries to isolate himself and his problems from others - strikes a chord in Chrollo, who has a weak spot for those who are abandoned, isolated, or alone.

Which is why he once told Kaneki to feel free to contact him if he needs help with anything, for any reason... and meant it. Which is fairly rare for Chrollo, if you aren't a Spider, or Hisoka.

honestly
maybe home should have had zombies
and cannibals and
you know... that kind of thing.
that'd be pretty fun?

MATTHEW LIN
ORIGINAL

ABDUXEL

Ah, the ever-evolving demon guy.

Chrollo's history with Matthew Lin is sort of complicated - but he doesn't care, so it doesn't matter. Long story short, Lin started out his stay in this world by getting involved with Hisoka, who Chrollo was sort of half involved with as well. It wasn't exclusive, so Chrollo didn't really care about that, but then it started getting in his personal space (e.g. something went on with them that caused Hisoka to stop speaking to Chrollo for a few days, and then they were like, flirting while Hisoka was in bed with Chrollo) and he found it a little annoying. The headgames Lin kept trying to play on him were a little annoying, too.

And then Lin practically outed him on the network and then copied Chrollo's appearance as a joke, and Chrollo really lost his patience with the guy.

For like two minutes! Because the thing is, Chrollo doesn't care enough about many things to hold onto grudges about it, and so he basically got over it after a few weeks and everything's been fine since then. They went out for drinks a few times, and shared marshmallows at a beach party... Lin's even stopped trying to headfuck Chrollo every other minute. It's cool.

That said, Chrollo is certainly aware that Lin is a demon and not unlikely to keep pulling out the games from time to time, so it's not as though his guard is down.

Also he kind of wants to drug Lin and cause him to go on a mass murdering spree. It would be... really fun.

incidentally
this guy is probably an alcoholic
huh.

REVAN
STAR WARS (EXPANDED)

EXSITHSTENTIAL

Not a person Chrollo is super-familiar with. However, he does know that Revan has some kind of alliance with Hisoka, and that he's the Ambassador of Maurtia Falls, where Chrollo currently lives. Both of these things were enough to get him semi-interested, but what's really got his attention right now is Revan's technological prowess and ability to create holographic artwork and such.

Not saying his professional interest was derailed by his sentimentality, but... that completely did happen.

he gives really great...
...hologram.
yeah i said it.

TARA MARKOV
TEEN TITANS

ROCKPUNS

...seems to be a normal teenage girl, so he basically assumes she's some kind of omnipotent demigod. Never trust things in this world.

...okay that's a little glib. The thing is, she replied to his post about a powers database, and she seemed terribly concerned about the effect that sort of thing might have on the community, but then claimed she had nothing worth documenting anyway. Suspicions raised.

But other than that she seems like a nice enough girl. Pop culture savvy, willing to help someone out when they don't know anything about movies.

the thing is
normal teen girls don't actually
...exist.
generally speaking

WILL GRAHAM
HANNIBAL

INFOMODDER

Chrollo met Will Graham during a charity event where people just kind of. Ended up seeing each other's memories. ...oops. He was intrigued enough by what he saw to pursue further conversations with him. Chrollo's interest in him only increased when Will went back to law enforcement, as it's always good to keep contacts active within legal spheres in a place like this.

Ultimately, Chrollo won an auction for fishing lessons. ...he bid on them for a few reasons, including 1. charity 2. Will seems interesting and 3. he's convinced he can use a fishing pole to kill someone from a reasonable distance if he learns how to handle it properly. Anyway, he and Will made a fishing date and then Will got Ported out for a few days, boo. Since then they've actually gone on the fishing date, and Will has given him some advice on crappy food. And diners.

it's always good to have your hook in the water
when it comes to law enforcement
if you're a criminal.
...see what i did there?
